Something in the line of Le Carre novels.

Leverage and Burn Notice have high IMDB ratings (well above 6) but when I tried watching Leverage, it’s pure Hollywood, relying on hi-tech gadgets, improbable timing and chance, combat expertise… and too gullible a target.

It sucks.

I’m getting Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy right now, both the 2011 movie and the 1979 Brit TV series. I’ve read the book and loved it.

Basically here’s what I want of a good espionage film:

shows good old spy fieldcraft (eg: The Cardinal of the Kremlin)

does not resort to brute force (no karate please)

reliance on existing technology (there’s a lot Hollywood can learn from the Stealing the Network series)

low-budget protagonist working solo – can seek help of other people but those people shouldn’t know the real job (like an innocent question “how to do xss” or something)

In gist – keep it real, keep it simple, stupid.

But that probably won’t happen, as filmmakers will resort to explosions and bare skin and formula – always. And that movie or TV series will not even rate. It will be dismissed by “expert critics” as boring and tedious.

In the end, books will still be the medium for that.

Been using Windows for coding a lot lately. My editors of choice are Programmer’s Notepad and Notepad++. Used to do the whole Emacs thing back then but that’s getting heavy with all the different machines I use.

So if you code a lot you should also take the time to adjust the color scheme of your editor. Light text on dark background is quite easy specially for very tired eyes.

I’m using the Zenburn theme for Notepad++ right now and I like it a lot.

The Notepad++ installation here at work does not have themes in them so if you want to use the themes, just download the latest zipped version of Notepad++ from their homepage and extract it. Copy the “themes” folder to your Notepad++ application folder, in my case here at work it’s in:

D:\Users\mylogin\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++\

Just copy the “themes” folder there and restart Notepad++. Select Settings > Style Configurator and select your preferred theme from the dropdown.

Zenburn theme on Notepad++

That’s it.

And another thing, make sure to enable Clear Type in Windows 7. I’m using Consolas font and it’s quite pretty.

I have always paid online transactions via Paypal including GoDaddy, Hostgator, NameCheap, etc.

My last GoDaddy purchase was on October. I used Paypal there too.

Today I tried to purchase a new domain (I got around 30 or so domains, the majority of which are spread between GoDaddy and NameCheap) and when I tried to checkout the shopping cart the payment method is only Credit Card and Check payments. So I kept trying, checking my account configurations and everything else.

Finally I gave up and called their support. Spoke to a fellow named Matt. He said that it’s a bug. If you use a promo code for the purchase, Paypal won’t be in the options for the payment method – just credit card and check. He said if he removed the promo code, Paypal comes up as a choice.

I was surprised and thank him. He offered to go ahead and make the purchase for me. I declined and said I was going to do it myself.

Yes I’m going to do it myself, but I will be purchasing the new domain at Namecheap.com.

If GoDaddy insists on going this way then they have lost my business. I know I’m just a speck but you lost me nonetheless.

I will now be gradually transferring my domains to namecheap.

You have probably heard that GMX has an Android app. That’s good. Sad thing is it doesn’t work for me.

While checking for Truecrypt on Android (it does not exist, time to wake up Truecrypt developers), I didn’t like all the file encryption offerings on the Android Market. So I reasearched for my one true favorite app since 1997 — GnuPG.

Of course it doesn’t exist yet. But there’s APG. It has file encryption. Then it mentioned integration with K-9. So what the hell is K-9 anyway? It turns out K-9 is an opensource email app (the name reminded me of Mutt, maybe alot of you old nix hands remembered that too).

So after that long-winded path, we come to this how-to.

1. Search for “K9 mail” on the android market and install.

2. Set it up like this:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8

username: youremail@gmx.com
imap server: imap.gmx.com
port: 143
connection security: none
password authentication: plain

outgoing server: mail.gmx.com
port: 465

3. Test outgoing and incoming emails.

I just donated to Wikipedia. Why? Free knowledge and “information must be free” and all that banter. It’s real for me. It should be to you too. I can still remember when information I wanted was so scarce. If you didn’t have a set of encyclopedia or a library close by — you’re pretty much left with asking your “elders” about the information you are seeking.

So here it is, if you haven’t donated yet, please do. Thanks.

Yes that’s 10 plus years of non-stop security threads from full disclosure, pen-test, bugtraq and many many more.

I’ll be creating a new gmail for those lists again. Yes they are quite spammy but they are very useful. More so than forums imho.

So for now I’m bidding goodbye to all those lists, the personalities in them, the petty flame wars (haven’t heard that phrase for so long now), the information overload. Being in those lists for so long I already developed a mental picture of the people in there, how they write, the pattern of their inquiries, etc.

I’m still in the process of unsubscribing all of them (huge list you see). This should be pretty done at the end of the day.

Note: if you don’t have any idea what I’m talking about, just ignore this post. It’s not for you
